When I attended the Omaha Performing Arts 2015/16 season announcement, Cirque Mechanics – Pedal Punk was at the top of my list to see. I love the magic, thrills and exciting stunts in any Cirque show, but one with bicycles has special childhood nostalgia for me.

My entire life I’ve been surrounded by bicycles and wheels. My parents owned a bicycle shop and I spent many days after school and in the summer helping them in their shop, dusting bicycles, rearranging displays and even minor repairs.

When I was about 10 years old my parents took me to a bicycle trade show/convention in Chicago and that’s where my love for BMX and trick bike stunts really formed. I saw the most amazing BMX riders of that time performing bunny hops, pogos and 360s and I was hooked! I wanted so badly to be able to do those stunts but was afraid of getting vertical, so the most extreme I ever did was mountain bike racing.

However, in the late 1990’s, when my dad was the ripe age of 45 he took up BMX racing with my brother. I loved cheering for them on race days! Bicycles, unicycles and BMX tracks were a huge part of my life as I grew up and I am beyond excited to see this unique Cirque show.

While my kids won’t have the unique experiences I did growing up in a bicycle shop, I want them to still experience the thrill of wheels. Cirque Mechanics – Pedal Punk has over 90 wheels on a stage and 11 artists including dancers, unicyclists, trampolinists, aerialists, a BMX rider, a juggler and clown, a rhythmic gymnast, a contortionist and a stilt-walking stuntman. I can’t wait for my kids to experience the same amazement I did with bicycles at a young age.

If you’ve never seen a Cirque show – prepare to astounded! Check out this video of Cirque Mechanics – Pedal Punk and see why I’m so excited to take my family to this show:
