Fresh out of milk? Too tired to head to the store? Have I got the recipe for you! This homemade oatmilk takes all of 5 minutes to make, only requires THREE ingredients and will cost you pennies! If you have some rolled oats, water, salt, blender, and a cheesecloth, you’re good to go. This makes the perfect oatmilk to add to your coffee, use for smoothies, in a bowl of cereal, or for any of your baking needs. The best thing about making homemade oatmilk is that it’s so quick to throw together. It’s literally a lifesaver when you didn’t know your kiddo drank the last of the milk before you started making your smoothie. So let me show you how to make some!
Ingredients You Need to Make Homemade Oatmilk
To make your own homemade oatmilk you literally just need the following three ingredients that you likely already have on hand:
- 1 cup of rolled oats – I would not recommend using instant or steel cut for this particular recipe.
- 4 cups of water – I always prefer using filtered water but any kind will do.
- Salt – Just a pinch for good measure
Equipment You Need to Make Homemade Oatmilk
- A blender – a food processor could also work in a pinch but would be a bit harder to pour from.
- Cheesecloth or a nutmilk bag – this is necessary for straining the milk from the oats.
- A mason jar or airtight container for storage.
How to Make Homemade Oatmilk
Unlike some of its other plant milk counterparts, oatmilk does not require any soaking prior to blending it up, which is part of what makes it so convenient when you need some milk in a pinch. All you have to do to make oatmilk is toss the oats and water into the blender and pulse!
One important thing to note is DON’T OVERBLEND the mixture or you could end up with some slimy milk, and nobody wants that! When you’ve pulsed for about 15-20 seconds, you’ll want to place a nutmilk bag or some cheesecloth into a bowl (I prefer to use my 4 cup glass measuring cup) and then pour the oatmilk mixture into the cheesecloth. This will help strain the oat chunks from the liquid. Pick up the cheesecloth and lightly squeeze the remaining liquid out, being careful not to squeeze too much, or once again you’ll end up with slimy milk.
Then simply place the milk into a jar for storage and use as needed! This will keep in the fridge for 3-5 days.
How to Use Homemade Oatmilk
It’s important to note that most store-bought oat milks have a richy and creamy mouthfeel thanks to the the fillers, oils, and gums that are included. This homemade recipe does not have any fillers, therefore your end results will have a thinner consistency than store-bought oatmilk. Personally I don’t really care for this recipe in my coffee as a result (but my husband loves it – especially in this Cinnamon Maple Oatmilk Latte). Homemade oatmilk is perfect for smoothies, cereal, or any baking recipe that calls for some kind of milk. It’s great for baked oatmeals, muffins, and pancakes.
It’s also so cheap to make that I often prefer to use it over regular milk to help my dollars go a little further. So next time you find yourself needing to make a grocery run for milk, give this a try instead!
