Homemade Brown Sugar – Just 2 Ingredients!

Did you know you can make your OWN brown sugar with two simple ingredients? Homemade. Brown. Sugar. I mean….I’ll be real…for far too long I had no clue you could do that. Nor did I realize that those two ingredients have been sitting in my pantry ALL THIS TIME!!! Surely we’ve all felt that crushing wave of disappointment when we discover that we are fresh out of that rich amber goodness just as a craving for warm chocolate chip cookies strikes us? Or worse yet, making said discovery AFTER we’ve already begun mixing the ingredients for said cookies? Is there any greater tragedy?! Well of course, but lets not get TOO serious here.

So how did I come to discover this amazing kitchen hack? Well let me tell you…it was very much by accident, and may or may not have involved tears. Every Christmas season I love to whip up a batch of one of my favorite holiday cookies, the classic ginger snap. So I buy a jar of molasses and have my way with it.

But here’s the deal: that molasses then sits in the back of my pantry lonely and dejected the rest of the year, just waiting for another Christmas to roll around so it can fulfill it’s life’s purpose. It’s not just me right? Because I literally have no idea what else to use molasses for. I kind of feel bad now that I think of it. I’m sure molasses has lots more uses…right? Poor molasses.

So anyway, once upon a time I was busy baking up a storm in the kitchen. I got halfway through my recipe, only to discover that I was completely out of brown sugar. After succumbing to an onslaught of tears (I was pregnant at the time… what do you expect?) I scoured the internet to see if white sugar would work out okay…..because I have kids people! People with kids don’t just hop in the car and go to the store for missing ingredients. WE ARE NOT THAT EXTRA.

To the great joy and delight of my lazy, overly pregnant self, I discovered that you can easily make brown sugar with two ingredients: white sugar, and molasses. And it just so happened that I had both of those ingredients chilling out in my pantry. And so, I lived happily ever after, and ate far too many cookies. The End.

That’s my story. Now, I don’t know what you’re story is, but I can tell you this:

If you’re out of store bought brown sugar

If you like making things from scratch

If you’re trying to reduce plastic waste

If you want to save a little money

If you have a lonely jar of molasses in the back of your pantry

or

If you just want to impress your friends

This recipe is for you!

I do this all the time, it makes for the chewiest cookies. I put two tablespoons of molasses per cup of sugar because I prefer dark brown sugar.
