Do you remember reading the classic young adult novel, ‘A Wrinkle in Time‘ by Madeleine L’Engle in school? The Rose has brought this award-winning novel to stage in a fantastic and amazing way. Having just re-read the novel the day I saw I show, I can say that the live performance follows the novel very closely. I was concerned that bringing L’Engle’s story of fantasy and intergalactic travel would be difficult, but The Rose nailed it in this show with great acting and technical precision! The only big difference is that one of the main characters, Charlie, was a little boy in the book, but a girl was cast for this show. However, at 11, little Charlie (played by Chloe Irwin) is fabulous! When she was possessed by the intergalatic villian, IT, her acting was amazing and even I was a little freaked out by her possession.

‘A Wrinkle in Time’ Show Description:
Charlie and Meg’s father has been missing for several years and one dark and stormy night, a trio of odd characters, Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Which and Mrs Who appear to help them find their father. They join up with a clairvoyant friend, Calvin, and embark on space travel to rescue their dad. Along the way, they discover all sorts of strange creatures from other planets, including the nefarious IT on planet Camazotz. This is a classic story of good overcoming evil.

Due to the scary nature of the story, this show is recommended for children ages 7 and up. My 8 year old daughter was scared by the tessering (aka time travel) because they showed flashes of images across the screen. Personally, Charlie’s possession was a little creepy and something straight out of a scary movie. Thinking about it still gives me chills.

The technology they use in the show to change the scenes and differentiate between the different planets they visit is impressive. There are lots of colorful lights, backdrops and realistic noise. The entire show was a great representation of a classic novel and really brought the story to life.
