How to Make Homemade BBQ Sauce

Maybe you think homemade BBQ Sauce is only for the professionals. You know, the kind of people who win competitions and stuff. Maybe you think it’s too hard to make your own. Maybe you wonder why anyone would even bother when there’s literally an overwhelming number of options to choose from at the grocery store. But I can think of plenty of reasons you might want to make your own homemade barbeque sauce.

Exhibit A: Like me, you have recently experienced a winter storm and travel outside the home is unsafe.

Exhibit B: You no longer can consume sugar (like me) which eliminates basically all store bought varieties.

Exhibit C: You just got back from the store and forgot to buy the BBQ sauce and you don’t feel like going out again.

Exhibit D: You just really like making things from scratch.

BBQ Sauce Ingredients

Did you know, that you most likely already have all but ONE ingredient it takes to make this BBQ sauce in your pantry? That’s right. All you need is tomato sauce, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, honey, molasses (this is the sticky…er, tricky one), paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and salt. Voila! Okay so maybe some things aren’t staples for everyone, but I pretty much always have these ingredients on hand. I mean let’s be real, how many of you make gingersnaps at Christmas and then never touch that molasses again? Now you’ve got another use for it!

How to Make Homemade BBQ Sauce

Simply combine all the ingredients in a sauce pan, whisk to combine, and then bring to a gentle simmer on low for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Then taste and add any additional flavoring as needed. I usually add just a little more cayenne, because I like the extra heat.

This is a sweet and spicy, refined sugar free, preservative-free, and wildly delicious BBQ sauce you can make at home in a pinch. And I double dog dare you to try it next time you’re hankering for some BBQ flavor…you won’t be disappointed!
